A slasher film is a type of horror film which involves a psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims in a graphically violent manner, often using cut tools such as a knife or axe.
Black Christmas (1974) is considered the first proper slasher film, directed by Bob Clark. Black Christmas was known as the earliest films which presented some of the sub-genre characters that slasher films are knowledge for: a mysterious stalker, a set of young adult victims, a secluded location with little or no adult supervision, and a graphic depictions of violence and murder. Its largely based on a series of murders that took place in Quebec, Canada around Christmas time. It follows a group of college students who must face a serial killer hiding in their sorority house.
It was not until the huge box office success of John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) and Sean S. Cunningham'sFriday the 13th (1980), that the slasher genre began to gain widespread popularity.
