Question 4 & 5 - Reflective evaluation - David Williams

The target audience for my media product would be males from age 18 to 29 because it contains violence which is mostly enjoyed by males and mild horror which can be to explicit for young children to watch.

User ratings

Friday the 13th

The film Friday the 13th (2009) is rated an 18 as it contains lots of gore and violence that are unsuitable from young children. The film is targeted at males age 18-29 as this is the type of audience that has rated the film the most. The film has also has a lot of ratings from people age 30-44 as the film is a remake of an older version which means the film appeals to people who have seen the original.

Halloween

The film Halloween (1978) is rated an 18 because it contains violent scenes and strong horror which could be unsuitable from children. This film is also aimed at males between 18-44 as violence is mostly liked by males. The film is mostly rated by an older target audience because the film was released in 1978 so which was the peak for views.

nightmare on elm street

Nightmare on elm street (1984) is rated an 18 because it contains strong horror and lots a violence. The film is mostly rated by males aged 18-29 and males aged 30-44 because this genre of film most appeals to men as it includes gore. The film is not watched by many women because the slasher genre may not appeal to them.

The texas chainsaw massacre

As we can see from IMDB's user ratings the film 'The texas chainsaw massacre (2003)' appeals mostly to males aged 18-29 again. This is also because the film contains voilence and horror which this target audience love.

Saw VI

Once again the most popular audience for this film is males aged 18-29 because of the violence and gore. A big chunk of users are also males aged 30-44 and only about a tenth of voters are female which shows they are bad audience to target a slasher film at.

From these ratings it is obvious that this sub-genre appeals mostly to men aged 18-29 which is why we have chosen this as our sub -genre as we wish to use similar conventions to these films.

BBFC certificate research

15

No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour. Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse.

horror - Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

There may be frequent use of strong language and Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail.
Violence - may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury.

18

where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence

Any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals.

I should aim for certificate 18 as my film will contain criminal acts (murder) and will contain strong violent and dangerous acts.

Survey Feedback

The target audince we showed our film to were aged 16-17. The feedback wasn't too positive which shows this isn't the target audience for our film.

Clip specifically designed to reach target audience

This clip is specifically designed for my target audience because it is aggressive and violent which is very popular with males aged 18-29.

The clip is similar to this one from the opening of scream in which the killers knife is shown stabbing the victim from her point of view.
