Question 1 - Reflective Evaluation - David Williams

In this question I will compare images from my film with images with from existing media products to see if they develop or challenge conventions. The films i will be comparing to are films that have given us inspiration.

This is the Lionsgate logo in the opening of SAW. the darkness in the background shows negativity and death. The font of the text is worn and rusty which shows neglection. the red in the clouds also relates to blood.

This is our logo create for our production company. It has developed conventions as the colour relates to death and blood. This logo also challenges the conventions as it is a lot lighter and looks a bit more peaceful. We have also challenged the lionsgate conventions by using a more messy black font as we believe this shows anger.

-----------------

This is one of the title images from the film friday the 13th. It shows one of the key objects from the film to show the audience that it is important. The scene only shows the mask on its own so that the audience can focus on it.

I believe this scene from our opening title develops conventions as it shows one major object from the film that relates to the killer. We have also challenged conventions by adding a background to give the audience an idea of the location.

----------------

Slasher sub genre is shown is the image because the killer is swinging a large weapon t a victim showing that the film contains gore and death. The killer is also made mysterious to add effect.

This image from my film develops conventions of this film because the killer is swinging a large weapon at the victim in attempt to kill them. Another reason my film develops conventions is because the killer is made to look mysterious.

------------------

This image from friday the 13th has established character by showing the characters facial expressions to show that they are scared. The character is seen as weak and vulnerable because the camera looks down on them as they are unimportant.

We have developed conventions of character  here as we can see the character shocked/scared by the facial expressions and they are also seen as a vulnerable character as they are looked down upon.

--------------------

This shot shows mise en scene as it displays a long shot of the location the film is shot in and it also compare the contrast of the victim in the water to the killer in the woods as the it is brighter in the water then the woods. the costume of the killer is also shown.

This shot from our film challenges the conventions of the first shot as there is no lighting contrast between the characters but it conforms to the the first movie as it shows a shot of the location and the costume of the killer.

4 key images
This scene from friday the 13th shows a reverse shot of the the killer attacking from the behind the victim. Tesnsion is built as the victim cannot see the killer but the audience can.

I have developed conventions from this film as i have done a reverse shot for the killer behind the victim to build tension. I have also challenged the conventions of this film as i have hidden the identity of the killer by hiding his face.

                                   ----------

In this image from friday the 13th the killers weapon is onloy shown wielded by the killer. This makes the character seem more intimidating and dangerous.

I have challenged this convention by showing the weapon on it's onw in the environment so that victim can stumble acrsoos it. This can make the killer seem careless and can also make him seem more mysterious. I have also decided to use a tool that is not commonly associated as a murder weapon.

                                    -------------

In this shot from nightmare on elmstreet the killers weapon is shown but the characters identity is hidden. This is becasue only a silouette is shown making the killer seemore mysterious.

I have developed this convention by only showing the weapon and by not showing the killers face.

               -------------

In this shot fro mthe film Halloween the killer is shown from a distance in a mirror on the right side of the screen. The killers identity is hidden by a mask.

I have developed conventions from this film by showing my killer from a distance with his identity hidden. I have also challenged this convention by displaying the killer in the centre of the screen to make them the main focus.
